Founded in 2015 and opened to the public in 2017, the museum is more than just an exhibition space—it is a living hub of history, community, and sustainability.
At Lišov Múzeum, the past is not merely remembered; it is kept alive through traditional architecture, artistic expressions, and educational initiatives. The museum is home to three distinct sections, each telling its own story: Lišovská Chyža, a faithfully restored 1916 traditional house, a replica of a Celtic dwelling built in collaboration with volunteers and archaeologists, and the Gallery of Masks, the only one of its kind in Slovakia, showcasing over 400 masks from around the world.
As time passed, the small village of Lišov, like many rural communities, faced challenges. Traditional knowledge, craftsmanship, and ways of life that had been passed down for generations were at risk of being lost in the face of modernization. Recognizing this, a group of dedicated individuals set out to revitalize and protect their cultural heritage through the creation of a museum that would not only preserve history but also actively engage the community.
The first step was the careful restoration of a traditional Lišov house, known as Lišovská Chyža, which stands as an authentic representation of local folk architecture. Inside, visitors step into a bygone era, experiencing the simple beauty of handcrafted furniture, rustic interiors, and time-honored building techniques.
In 2016-2017, the museum undertook a bold new project—rebuilding a Celtic dwelling to honor the region’s ancient history. With the collaboration of historians, archaeologists, and volunteers from across Europe, the structure was meticulously crafted using techniques and materials available to Celtic settlers thousands of years ago. The result is a powerful connection between past and present, inviting visitors to imagine life in prehistoric times.
Beyond these dwellings, the museum is also home to an extraordinary collection of masks in the Gallery of Masks. Featuring pieces from Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe, this exhibition explores the universal tradition of masks in rituals, ceremonies, and performances across cultures.
But Lišov Múzeum is not just about the past—it is about empowering the present and shaping the future. The museum hosts a local artisan shop, supporting traditional craftsmen, artists, and farmers by offering their handmade goods to visitors. It also serves as a hub for ERASMUS+ programs, welcoming international students and young professionals for educational exchanges, skill-building workshops, and cultural experiences.
As the museum flourished, new challenges arose: How can we keep younger generations engaged in preserving our heritage? How do we ensure our cultural traditions continue to thrive? Embracing these challenges, the museum expanded its mission to include sustainability initiatives—relying on locally sourced materials, inherited craftsmanship, and eco-conscious restoration projects.
One of the museum’s most ambitious projects is the renovation of a historic house from 1887, using original materials such as clay, stone, and wood. Once completed, this space will be transformed into a community café, offering a place for locals and visitors to gather, share stories, and experience the essence of rural life in Lišov.
Today, Lišov Múzeum stands as a beacon of cultural preservation and community spirit. Visitors from across Slovakia and beyond come to experience its exhibitions, workshops, and seasonal events, such as traditional craft fairs and Christmas markets.
